How to Fix a Cut Tire The Easy Way! (For Off Road Tires Only)

I don’t know about everybody else, but I was always told you can’t fix a hole in the sidewall of a tire. However, at least in the case of these big offroad tires, it would seem you most certainly can. While the process must be followed properly and is a little work for sure, it’s nothing too complicated to labor intensive.

The first step is prepping the area around the punctures for the repair. This product is a two-part compound – think: JB Weld – and comes with a primer to promote adhesion, but for that to work, the area around the hole has to have a little texture for the compound to grab on to. That’s where the special tire grinder wheel comes in. Using the specialized disk, carefully grind away the rubber around he hole, leaving it feeling a bit rough to the touch, while being sure to eliminate any sharp edges or points in the hole itself.

Next, you brush on the primer, applying a nice even coat to the freshly-ground area around the hole. If the puncture is a sizable one, you want to also grind and prime the inside of the tire to give both sides the best possible chance to adhere to the compound. Once the grinding and priming is done, it’s time for the mixing, Taking equal parts of the two compound components, knead them together for a few minutes, until all traces of the yellowish-brown component has been turned black.

Once the compound has been successfully kneaded into submission, you’ll be left with a big chunk of rubbery putty. Smear the putty over and around the punctures and work it into the desired shape and thickness over the hole. For the larger holes, you want to press the putty into the hole as well, then work it from the back to spread out around the puncture and get as good a seal as possible. Then you just let it dry, and you can mount your tire back up and hit the trails for another day of fun!
