Amazon Reportedly Considering Dropping “Dukes of Hazzard” From Streaming Lineup Over Confederate Flag Concerns

The controversy over The Dukes of Hazzard is nothing new. For the most part, it seems like this controversy revolves around the use of the Confederate flag in the show. Painted on the roof of the General Lee Dodge Charger, the vehicle that is essentially the star of the show, the flag has some up in arms. Time and time again, we have read about different measures to try and turn General Lee into a more politically correct vehicle or remove it from history entirely.

With the recent political climate, it seems like lots of corporate America is changing their tune with their offerings. In terms of media, basically any show that involves police has come into question. Recently, we have seen the likes of both Live P.D. and COPS canceled. There has also been concern over the children’s cartoon Paw Patrol which involves police dogs.

This time, Vulture is reporting that Amazon is mulling over their views on The Dukes of Hazzard’s use of the Confederate flag once again. As the flag is frequently referred to as a symbol of racism and oppression, the conversation has opened back up. Perhaps this is aided, in part, by NASCAR‘s banning of the flag from their events and properties.

Vulture says that the show isn’t dead to rights yet. Amazon hasn’t made a definitive decision on the matter. Instead, they’re simply “Weighing their options” in regards to the future of the show on their IMDb TV streaming platform. Vulture also reported, “The show has been flagged internally for review as execs revisit and evaluate their overall content guidelines.”

It seems like the show has been at the center of controversy for years. Several years back, we reported that the second-hand market for General Lee merchandise would spike after Warner Brothers decided to stop licensing the confederate flag version of the car.

At the end of the day, should controversial symbols be removed from media because they offend one group or another?
