California Initiative Attempts to Ban All Gas and Diesel Powered Vehicles Produced After 2020

California Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, has announced a new initiative that might hit close to home. Part of the initiative is to ban gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle sales for those produced after 2020.

What’s Actually Happening?

So, something like this couldn’t possibly work, could it?

Essentially what we’re looking at is known as an “initiative.”

In other words, it’s in the infancy of a very long process to make the consideration actually become law. As defined by the ever-reliable Wikipedia “a petition signed by a certain minimum number of registered voters can force a government to choose to either enact a law or hold a public vote.”

With a lack of political background and some brief research to back it up, in layman’s terms, it’s a petition to incite a vote.

John Hankey, the man behind the measure, needs to collect a total of 623,212 registered voters’ support to continue. The effort has 180 days to reach this goal before it is submitted to county elections officials before July 27, 2020.

Our Opinion on the probable Outcome

Again, we’re certainly no political experts. However, something like this seems pretty far fetched. There might very well come a day where it makes sense to ban diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles. We’re sure that it would take more than a single year to implement, though.

Transportation is a substantial part of the backbone of American culture. Therefore, such a maneuver would need to be slowly implemented before becoming a reality. Some of the biggest companies in the country would need to completely retool to support the new law.

Long story short, it’s pretty ridiculous to think that something like this could come into play in such a short time period. We could very much see a day where fossil-fueled vehicle production becomes a thing of the past. The more likely timeline would have consumer habits changing the dynamic.

Recently, we, as consumers, have become more interested in electric vehicles. One would think that this transition is likely to make said landscape entirely electric before such a law could come into play.
