Team Penske Racers Build Lego Cars To Race

What do you do when it’s not a work day at Penske Racing? You build a makeshift Pinewood derby track, grab a few hundred LEGOs, and you have your drivers and crew guys team up to build their own gravity-powered racecars. As you might expect, an activity that could and should have been a fun, relaxing, team-building type of exercise ended up being highly competitive and brought out the guys propensity for pushing the rules to gain any advantage as well, because when it comes down to it, anything worth doing is worth winning. Despite driving some of the fastest cars on the planet, these guys get just as intense about tiny cars that don’t even have engines racing a few yards down a track that looks like it was built in one of the drivers’ basements.

The teams each get a few minutes to throw together their best LEGO downhill racers, then race heads up to see who earns a berth in the final trio battling it out for bragging rights. After the first round of eliminations, they have a few more minutes to make repairs and/or upgrades to their racers, then it’s back to the starting line for the finale. The first pair of cars down the track are the teams of Ryan Blaney and Brad Keselowski vs Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud. Ryan and Brad take the win but suffer some damage to their car in the process. However, as you’ll see, that seems to be the norm for the day. The second heat features cars built by Juan Pablo Montoya and Joey Logano vs Austin Cindric and Helio Castroneves.

Juan and Joey took the “heavyweight” approach while Austin and Helio built what looks like a dragster, but in a world powered by gravity, the heavier mass takes the win as expected. The final first-round matchup pitted the teams of three against one another, with team Paul, Ricky, and Dane taking on Scott, Will, and Fabian. Scott, Will, and Fabian took the win and earned their spot in the finals as well.

The final trio of teams would have time to make repairs and changes to their cars, and all three took the same “add more weight” approach to try to put gravity to work as best they could. In the end, Brad and Ryan would take the overall win when their ride hit the bottom first to take the checkered flag. Juan and Joey finished second, and Team Australia would come in third.
