Tesla’s $250 Tequila is Already Selling for Over $1,000 on eBay

In yet another interesting maneuver that seems to be targeted at some sort of marketing, Tesla has come out and released another limited, offbeat product. The latest from the brand is actually liquor as were introduced to Tesla tequila. The alcohol comes in a collectible lightning bolt shaped bottle filled with “An exclusive, premium 100% de agave tequila añejo aged in French oak barrels, featuring a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish,” per their website.

The tequila sells for $250 per bottle and just like all of the other novelty items sold by the brand, has come and gone as quickly as it was listed. Folks freaked out about the opportunity to grab yet another unique keepsake and many flippers are taking advantage of it themselves. In fact, the bottles have been seen on eBay, sold for more than $1000 each. They’re empty, of course, because it’s not legal to sell alcohol without a license.

So why exactly is Tesla making tequila and what’s up with the limited quantity? Certainly, this couldn’t be worth their time for whatever money it is that they brought in from the sale. Right?

Well, we would say that this wasn’t worth it in monetary value alone. However, what this would appear to be is another marketing maneuver by the company that has yet to spend a dollar on advertising. Even as the biggest automaker in the world by market capitalization, Tesla refuses to spend on ads which makes them different than pretty much every other major auto manufacturer.

Instead, with limited releases like this and the obscure nature of Elon Musk’s public-facing personality, it seems like viral attention is constantly on the brand as they come up with off-the-wall ideas to stay one step ahead. At face value, it might look like Tesla is interested in selling a quirky accessory for collectors and enthusiasts. However, the idea seems to go much deeper beyond that as here we are, yet again, talking about Tesla. For those who are still failing to put two and two together, perhaps, this is Elon Musk’s idea of how to get free advertising.

For those who think it’s silly, taking one look at all of the outlets who have picked the story up so far tends to tell us that it might just be working.
